Chapters 1-3
1.) In Chapter 1 what song does Kino hear as he awakes and as he watches the dawn? As he watches the scorpion move slowly down the rope, what new song comes into Kino's mind? What song "roared in his ears" after he kills the scorpion?
In Chapter 1, the song Kino hears as he awakes is the Song of the Family; a peaceful song. As he watches the scorpion move slowly down the rope towards Coyotito, the evil song comes into his mind. After he kills the scorpion, the song of danger roars in his ears.
2.) AFter discovering "the greatest pearl in the world." what are some of the things that Kino wants?
After discovering this pearl, Kino wants clothes, an actual house, and most of all, a doctor for Coyotito.
3.) What are some of the similarities between Kino and Juana? How do their attitudes toward the pearl differ and why?
Some of the similarities between Kino and Juana are that they can both sense when evil approaches. Their attitudes towards the pearl differ because Kino wants to keep the pearl until he gets a good deal for it, but Juana wants to throw it back into the sea because she senses that it has brought evil to them.
4.) Why does the doctor refuse to treat Coyotito? How does Kino respond? Why?
The doctor refuses to treat Coyotito because he saw they were poor, and he only uses his time to treat the people with big money. Kino responds with great anger, and tries to punch his gate open. He does this because if the doctor in the town wouldn't help Coyotito, no one else would.
5.) Briefly describe how the discovery of the great pearl affects each of the following: the priest, the shopkeepers, the doctor, the beggars, and the pearl buyers. What qualities are revealed through their responses? Why does Kino become "every man's enemy" after he discovers the great pearl?
This discovery affects the priest because he all of the sudden became closer of a friend with Kino and Juana, the shopkeepers and the pearl buyers try to cheat him by giving him a lower amount of money than he deserves, the doctor all of the sudden "changes his mind" about treating Coyotito, and the beggars only ask Kino for his pearl. Kino becomes every man's enemy because everyone, including his neighbors, want to get the pearl from him, but cannot.
6.) Kino hears the Song of Evil between the doctor's visits. What does Kino fear the doctos has done? How does Kino's ignorance place him at the mercy of the doctor?
Kino fears that the doctor has sent one of his servants to steal the pearl while he and Juana were asleep. Kino's ignorance places him here because he is desperately and urgently looking for help.
7.) Near the end of Chapter 3, Juana tells Kino, "Let us throw it (the pearl) back into the sea. It has brought evil." How does Kino respond to Juana's statement? Has the pearl brought evil to Kino and Juana?
Kino responds by telling her that first thing in the morning, they would go to the capital and sell it. The pearl has brought evil to them, because everyone they know is against them, and trying to steal it from them.
8.) In Chapter 3 the narrator says, "...it is sad that humans are never satisfied, that you give them one thing and they want something more." Do you agree or disagree?
I agree to this, because humans, especially Americans, take money to a huge advantage, and they buy something they want, but another thing comes out and they buy it, and so on.
